About the Author/Teacher

Nathan Petitpas is a percussionist, drummer, composer, and music educator based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

He has been an active member of Toronto's contemporary music community since his arrival in the city in 2012. He joined the Thin Edge New Music Collective in 2012 and also works regularly with Fawn Chamber Creative and the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan Ensemble. Additionally, he and violinist Suhashini Arulanandam perform as a duo under the name Duologue. Through all of this, Nathan has had the great pleasure to premiere dozens of compositions by living composers.

As a freelancer, Nathan has performed with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Cirque du Soleil, Against the Grain Theatre, the Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few. Outside of a classical context, Nathan has also performed with many projects in jazz, folk, singer-songwriter, rock, progressive rock, and country styles.

As an educator Nathan has taught drum set, piano, classical percussion, Western music theory, and composition in various programs and across various styles. He has been teaching at the Regent Park School of Music since 2015 and has also taught for organizations such as The Royal Conservatory of Music, the Evergreen Community Gamelan, the Toronto All City Band, the South Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra, the Calgary Youth Orchestra, and the Edmonton Youth Orchestra.

Nathan holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Music degree from Acadia University, both with a concentration in percussion performance. He has also undertaken artistic residencies and summer workshops at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Avaloch Farms Music Institute.
